(KFYI News) A new addition to the Waste Management Phoenix Open this year is the "Greenest Show" campaign, designed to promote creative ways for the disposal of waste and encouraging fans to lead a more environmentally sustainable lifestyle.
As part of Waste Management's Zero Waste Challenge this year, Janette Coates from the Open says 100 percent of tournament waste goes to recycling and composting facilities.
Waste Management Phoenix Open Green Facts:
- Known as the "Greenest Show on Grass" with its focus on sustainability, the Waste Management Phoenix Open recycled or reused 100 percent of waste from the 2013 event through its “Zero Waste Challenge.”
- Last year, the event had 5,795 recycling and compost bins on-site to achieve 100 percent diversion from landfills.
- In 2014, thegoal is to continue to direct 100 percent of tournament waste away from landfills and into recycling facilities.
- The sun shines on 60 solar-powered compactors at the Waste Management Phoenix Open, which holds five times the waste of a traditional bin.
