One Dead, One Critical As Red-Light Runner Hits Scooter

MESA, Ariz. (AP) — Authorities say a Mesa man has died and a woman is critically injured after a vehicle and a scooter collided at an intersection.

The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office says the collision happened around 7:40 a.m. Saturday when a sedan traveling eastbound on Broadway Road failed to stop for a red light at Ellsworth Road.

Sheriff's spokesman Christopher Hegstrom says the sedan hit the scooter, which was stopped for the light.

The sedan then hit a pole before coming to rest.

Hegstrom says the 52-year-old man riding the scooter died at the scene.

The 43-year-old female driver of the sedan had to be extricated from the vehicle. She was then flown to a Scottsdale hospital with life-threatening injuries.
